• an administration and social amenities building for its waste collection and vehicle maintenance staff,
• a garage for keeping its fleet of vehicles in working order,
• covered parking areas for household waste skips,
• manoeuvring and outdoor storage areas.

The bioclimatic architecture, featuring internal buffer areas, will offer maximum comfort for employees. Wood is used for the framework and is a visible feature throughout the building.

The use of a hot water production system coupled with rainwater recovery was an obvious choice to meet the heavy demand from the vehicle washing station.

The project adopted by the Owner, Vannes urban area authority, was that proposed by the consortium including lead partner DLW architects (Nantes) and Girus. The cost of the works is €3.3m.

Girus is providing engineering services for the project in the framework of a basic assignment including working design studies.

The 12-member team led by Dominique Mermoud has joined up with Fabrice Saussac, who entered Girus recently to head its development in the fields of water, infrastructure, roads and utilities.

Housed in ETEC’s offices at Le Bourget du Lac, Girus’ fine new Savoy branch will work mainly to the east of a line running from Geneva through Chambéry to Grenoble.

Since it was created in 1986, ETEC has been extremely active in the fields of fluids, building construction and energy.

It has expanded into the areas of solar energy and construction projects in mountainous areas, but it also provides expertise in more specific activities such as fire safety, the construction of crematoriums and industrial processes.

The mixed-purpose project includes social housing, owner-occupied properties and a hotel residence, all in low-consumption buildings. It covers 100 ha in an area of former brownfield and urban wasteland sites.

Girus acted as technical advisor to EDF OS (designer and builder of the energy production facilities and investor in the project) in producing and submitting the “heat fund” documents.

The planned heating network will use energy recovered from the town’s waste water network. It thus provides a well-mastered, innovative solution for recovering energy from the waste water network adjoining the land to be used for the operation.

With Bouygues Immobilier as Owner, construction of the project will begin in the coming months.

The building is intended to replace the medical services currently on site and must meet the needs of the base’s 20,000 residents.

In the framework of its assignment, which will cover the structure, economic aspects and fluids, Girus is also providing know-how in the field of environmental design.

The aim of constructing a low-consumption building will be taken into account when choosing the technology used: preliminary walls with built-in insulation, gas-absorption heat pumps, dual-flow ventilation systems, solar hot water production, rainwater recovery, etc. All the technical equipment will be managed by a centralised management system.

This type of operation will ensure rational gas use while limiting peak electricity consumption, a specific difficulty in this region.

The consortium was able to meet the objectives set for the project, namely to build an environmentally friendly facility perfectly suited to medical requirements, with well-controlled management costs. The building is expected to cost €4.3m.

The aim of this project is to improve the multipurpose facility’s attractiveness. Several ways of doing this have been outlined:

• Aquatic development: creation of family leisure areas, renovation of the outdoor Olympic pool, creation of a balneotherapy pool.
• Creation of new “dry” sports areas with rooms for body-building, squash, rock-climbing and board sports.
• Overall renovation of the congress hall, including improved thermal insulation and soundproofing.
• The creation of a new, independent, cafeteria.

Renovating the existing thermal insulation, incorporating environmentally certified features and improving the energy recovery systems are some of the operation’s crucial objectives. The specific technical solutions presented in Girus’ project were all assets in this respect.

The structure of the building will be reinforced with a 25m wooden framework extension. It will also be brought into compliance with safety standards (renovation of the fire safety system, access control, etc.). Lastly, disabled access will be reviewed throughout the site. The operation should be carried out in stages over a 4-year period, allowing for the fact that the facility must remain open to the public at all times. The cost of the works will be €21m.

The city’s treatment plant is designed to handle 90,720 m³/day of waste water, i.e. the water consumption of an equivalent population of 1,300,000.

The treatment process used is that of activated sludge, involving three specific stages: thickening, anaerobic digestion and mechanical dewatering.

Girus is responsible for studying two projects: a conventional solution involving thermal drying and sludge incineration, and a more innovative one consisting of mixed thermal and solar drying.

It is therefore with an inventive and creative approach that Girus will propose a process for optimising the solar component and will study all possible ways of improving the overall energy performance of the facility, for example the technical feasibility of using the excess heat energy available at the cogeneration plant. The treatment plant should provide an efficient, ecological solution suited to the context in Marrakech.

The plant at La Roche produces 90% of the 33 million m³ of water consumed each year in the urban area.

The project involves rebuilding and renovating the existing structures and adding new treatment installations, with the aim of handling 200,000 m³ per day in the long run.

This programme is in line with the EU’s major objectives in terms of drinking water supply, namely to produce sufficient quantities and ensure good-quality distribution as part of the permanent improvement of services to users.

Girus will be providing the metropolitan area council with its expertise by validating and checking the studies carried out by the design and construction supervision consortium and in contract award procedures. It will also provide technical support throughout the construction phase to cope with a major constraint, that of keeping the existing installation in service during the construction of the new plant on the same site.

 Girus, which is lead partner for this assignment, is associated with Egis. The works, costing an estimated €50m, are scheduled to begin in 2013 and be completed in 2018.

The assistance assignment aims to help the hospital to build and operate a power plant.

The current cogeneration contracts (7.5 MW and 2.5 MW) will come to an end in February 2012 and January 2013. The sites also have six gas boilers with a total output of 37.5 MW.

The aim of Girus’ assignments is to address the issues facing the hospital:

• Obtain the best overall cost (investment and operation) for the supply of heating energy
• Ensure the continuity and regularity of supplies
• Study funding simulations for each legal arrangement proposed (conventional contract, energy performance contract, comprehensive contract, public-private partnership, BEAH, etc.).

The first stage of the studies lasted four months. A second stage includes preparation of the documents needed to implement the chosen solutions, as well as legal assistance in conjunction with co-contractor Adamas.

The first part of the assignment involved a hydraulic study of the catchment area and the sizing of the stormwater network and a storm weir.

The second part involved design services and construction supervision for the urban development works and burial of the dry networks.

Girus’ approach will be to conserve safety features for pedestrians and disabled people, place exposed-aggregate concrete on hard shoulders, install street furniture to provide added greenery, narrow the roadway, create speed humps and designate different types of parking space.

 The cost of the works for this village of 30,000 residents is €1m.
